Mr Arend Merrie
Mr Arend Merrie MBChB, PhD, FRACS is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Auckland Hospital and a Specialist Colorectal Surgeon and Endoscopist in private practice.
Arend's main clinical interests are laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques for colorectal surgery combined with research interests to develop an evidence base for the management of patients with colorectal disease. He has an interest in the management of patient with severe endometrioisis involving the bowel and has a growing national reputation in this area. Following completion of specialist general surgery training Arend has undertaken two years of formal sub specialisation training in Colorectal Surgery and he has instituted and developed laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery at both Auckland & Mercy Hospitals. Whilst undertaking advanced general surgical training Arend undertook a molecular biology based PhD resulting in national and international awards for his work with publications in peer reviewed journals, stimulating an ongoing interest in surgical research. In addition Arend is a father of two, reviewer for the New Zealand medical journal and other international surgical journals, clinical advisor to the Northern Regional Familial Bowel Cancer Registry and Chairman of Surgical Audit in the Department of Surgery in Auckland Hospital.
