Causes
The development of endometriosis may involve a combination of several factors, including heredity.
The retrograde menstruation theory suggests that during your period some of the menstrual tissue can back up through the fallopian tubes and implant in the pelvis and abdomen. It is likely that nearly all women experience some menstrual tissue backup during their cycles, but that in women who develop endometriosis, there is a hormonal imbalance or immune system problem, which allows this tissue to grow in the wrong place.
